SAAC and University of the District of Columbia Basketball Teams to Host First Ever “Fight Hunger Games” February 13th

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is coordinating a food collection drive in conjunction with the February 13th Men's and Women's basketball doubleheader vs. LIU Post over the course of the next several days, in an effort to help members of the local community in need.

This food drive, which began last Monday, will continue up until tip-off of the Men's and Women's home basketball games on Wednesday night.  Basketball fans are encouraged to bring canned or non-perishable food items to the game, including canned vegetables, soups, and tuna, along with rice, pastas, and other dried goods.  Collection boxes will be stationed around campus throughout the week, in front of Building 47, in between Buildings 38 and 39, inside the lobby of Building 41, and outside of the office of Associate Director of Athletics, Kendra Greene.

"Throughout DC and all of America, the issue of hunger is ever present. Particularly in our city, where the fight against hunger is significant," senior soccer player and SAAC President, Mario Banengas, said.  "There is a tendency to only think of hunger problems during the holidays, but hunger is an issue all-year round, and it needs to be addressed as such."

The food drive culminates at the beginning of the Firebirds Men's/Women's basketball doubleheader next Wednesday, after which, all donated items will be delivered to "Food & Friends", a DC non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that all its residents have access to nutritious meals, especially those who need them the most.  Additionally, Firebird fans may make monetary donations, which will be forwarded, along with the food donations, to Food & Friends.

For additional information regarding the food drive, please contact Kendra Greene, Associate Director of Athletics at kgreene@udc.edu.  Game tickets can be purchased in person at the UDC Gym Box Office.
