UDC Men’s Soccer Notches Two Victories and Participates in Educational Tour of Gettysburg’s Civil War Grounds.

Shippensburg, PA - Over Labor Day weekend the UDC Men's Soccer team traveled to Shippensburg, PA to participate in the Shippensburg Invitational Soccer Tournament. This was the Firebirds first road trip of the season, and they opened the tournament on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Goldey-Beacom College.  Robel Davis notched the team's first and only goal of the game at the 40-minute mark. It proved to be enough as the Firebirds outlasted Goldey-Beacom to start off the tournament and the season.

After Friday's successful start to the tournament, the team took an educational fieldtrip to Gettysburg to learn more about our nation's Civil War history. On Saturday, the team was able to spend two hours learning from the tour about the Battle of Gettysburg that took place in 1863, with many of the team's international students learning about it for the first time.  The fieldtrip created an opportunity for the players to spend time with one another off the soccer field.  Taking in the Gettysburg experience together, teammates were able to bond in an environment unrelated to soccer. This type of off-field activity, as head coach Matt Thompson reiterated, provided the team with an opportunity to "connect with one another and learn about the nation's history."

The following day, the Firebirds resumed their on-field quest and were victorious over Felician College, 2-1. Roque Hernandez tallied the game's first goal during the 17th minute to give the Firebirds the early lead, assisted by Mario Benegas and Adriel Garcia. After Felician tied the game in the 30th minute, it appeared as though the game was headed for a draw.  With an assist by Adriel Garcia in the 79th minute, Mario Benegas drove home the game-winner to cap off a 2-0 tournament record for the Firebirds.

Fueled by a successful trip to Shippensburg, PA, the Firebirds look to continue their early-season success tomorrow in an afternoon game against Chestnut Hill at 4:00pm.
