NYACK, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over host Nyack College in NCAA Division II East Regional action Saturday afternoon at Nyack High School.
Sophomore Gabriel Torres continued his torrid offensive play with an assist on the Firebirds' first goal and later his own goal which proved to be the gamewinner. UDC improved to 2-2 overall with the victory and handed the Warriors (2-1-1) their first loss of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Luis Aguirre earned a complete game victory in his Firebird debut today, stopping four of five shots faced. Nyack's Alvaro Magel made six saves and allowed two goals in a losing effort.
Neither team could generate much offense in the first half, but it was UDC that broke through with a goal just over two minutes remaining before intermission. Torres sent a gorgeous cross into the box on a free kick, and a charging 6-foot-3-inch junior midfielder Michael Agboola headed the ball in to put the Firebirds up, 1-0.
Nearly 20 minutes into the second half, Torres scored UDC an insurance goal after some pretty passing by juniors Kelvin Hererra and Kevin Ortez – both were credited with assists on the play. The Firebirds led 2-0 with about 24 minutes left to play.
The Warriors finally got on the board with nine minutes remaining when Davide Alessio scored an unassisted goal during a scramble in the box right in front of the net.
UDC's defensive line held Nyack to only one shot (a header shot saved by Aguirre) during the remaining nine minutes of regulation, as the Firebirds held on for the 2-1 victory.
Next up, UDC will host Barton College on Wednesday, September 13th at 3 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played on campus at UDC Field, but forecasted inclement weather has caused the site of the game to be moved to the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD.
