Firebird Student-Athletes Participate in Resume Building Workshop
WASHINGTON, DC - On Friday, September 21st, Firebird student-athletes participated in a resume building workshop as part of the Student-Athlete Development Series (SDS). SDS aims to provide educational opportunities to the student-athletes off the field and outside the classroom. A representative from the division of student affairs office ran a seminar on creating and maintaining a successful resume.
In the seminar, many topics were touched on that are essential to creating and effectively utilizing a resume. Resumes are often the first and only item an employer will look at to measure whether or not someone has the potential to adequately fill a position within a company. The resume should be used to land the initial interview. Each resume should be tailored to the specific job.
The student-athletes were engaged throughout the presentation, and they were given a resume guide information booklet. The guide contains examples of different types of resumes, from resumes that focus on skills and education to more functional themed resumes. The student-athletes were also shown proper ways to set up the layout of their resume. Various types of letters, including cover letters, thank you letters, and letters of decline, were also discussed in detail with regards to proper methods of construction and times when they are appropriate to be delivered.
The resume-building workshop proved to be a very thoughtful and educational seminar that will surely benefit the University of the District of Columbia student-athletes in their future quests for jobs. The instructor ended the seminar by suggesting that each student-athlete create their own resume (if they had not done so already) to be critiqued and improved upon.
The University of the District of Columbia strives to make their student-athletes successful both on the field and in the classroom, and this extends to life after their college career. Preparing the student-athletes with a successful resume gives them the first tool towards success after graduation.
