UDC Women’s Tennis Picked 4th in East Coast Conference Preseason Poll

WEST BABYLON, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team was picked to finish 4th in the East Coast Conference 2017 Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches.

 

The Firebirds, who finished 7-7 overall and 4-3 in league play last season, earned 41 points in the poll to place 4th behind the preseason favorite and five-time reigning ECC champions, New York Institute of Technology (62 points, six first place votes), the five-time ECC runner-up, No. 2 Queens College (58 points, two first place votes), and 3rd place LIU Post (43 points).

 

UDC currently has a roster of five that includes one All-East Coast Conference returnee and two newcomers. Senior Dominika Hadnadova, a First Team All-ECC selection in 2015 and Second Team All-ECC last fall, is the team's lone senior. Newcomers, Florence Clercx and Anastasia Khomyachenko will join the team this fall. Khomyachenko is a junior transfer from Cerritos College where she was 38-12 overall in singles play and 37-14 overall in doubles play over her two-year career.

 

The Firebirds will open the 2017 season with four straight in-conference matches, beginning with back-to-back road matches in Long Island on Friday, September 8th at NYIT and at LIU Post on Saturday, September 9th. They will then host Queens College for their season home opener on September 15th, followed by two more home matches vs. Molloy on September 17th and Division I cross town foe Georgetown on September 20th.  

 

September 22nd – 25th, UDC will compete in the ITA East Regional Championships at a location to be determined. Then, the Firebirds return to league dual matches with road contests at Daemen College (September 29th) and Roberts Wesleyan College (September 30th).

 

October matches are as follows: October 7th vs. Molloy; October 9th vs. USciences; October 10th @ Wilmington (DE); October 15th vs. Millersville; October 19th vs. St. Thomas Aquinas; October 20th vs. LeMoyne.

 

ECC Championship Tournament semifinals and finals will be hosted by Queens College in Flushing, NY. The semifinal round will be Friday, October 27th, and the final will be held on Saturday, October 28th.
