Firebird Spotlight - Teara Shaw, Women's Basketball

Profile:

Teara Shaw is a senior, Health Education major from Bronx, NY.  Her goal after graduation is to play basketball abroad professionally.  Eventually, Teara plans to pursue strength and conditioning as a trainer.  In the middle of six children, Teara started playing “playground” basketball at age seven.  She was introduced to organized basketball in junior high school where she progressed to summer league play.

About UDC and City:

Teara describes DC this way: “Not as fast as New York, but not too slow.” She also added, “Obama lives in DC, and that is exciting.” She particularly enjoys visiting the Smithsonian museums.

Teara’s favorite faculty member is Dr. Slack.  “He is outgoing, funny and made me feel welcomed.  He appreciates student-athletes,” she said. She also added that within the athletic department, everyone connects on a personal level. “There is a family atmosphere in the athletic department. The administration digs deep to keep us academically focused.  The support is amazing.”

Favorities:

Kobe Bryant is Teara’s favorite athlete.  The opportunity to go with a friend to the Verizon Center to see him play against the Wizards was a highlight of her Washington experience.  Her favorite food is talapia.  “It is amazing!” Teara said. Self described as a bit of a loner, Teara does enjoy bonding with her teammates.  She enjoys bowling, roller skating, video games and “old school” music as she was influenced by her mother.

On the court:

Pre-game, Teara listens to music to get in the zone.  She tries not to think too much during games.  “I don’t pressure myself and try to stay calm. I focus on what I need to do to lead, to run the show, and I think ‘no turnovers.’ I know point guard runs the show, the team feeds off the point.  While coming out aggressively, I have to keep everything calm and do my best.”

Advice for students:

Teara advises students: “Believe in yourself.  Be ready to go for it; that is key to get you to where you want to go.  Life is competitive - whether in sports or business.”

Coach Butler on Teara Shaw:

“Teara is having a very good season as our leader on the court.  She has improved a great deal being a play maker at the point guard position.  She will be a key piece to us winning our first ECC Championship and getting back to the NCAA Tournament.”
