Lakewood, NJ- Cheyenne Nettleton led the Firebirds to a 85-83 overtime victory over the Georgian Court Lions which also resulted in a four game win streak. UDC improved to 4-1 ,while Georgian Court fell to 0-3 on the season.
UDC had five players score in the double figures, with Nettleton leading the way with 24 points off the bench. Juanye Colon scored 16 points, followed by Aaren Smith who put up his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Zachary Olukanni scored 11 and Jahmir Marable Williams contributed 12 points off the bench.
It was a slow first half for the Firebirds with the Lions taking the early lead with a 7-0 run. Olukanni would end the shooting drought after a made layup at 17:34. Georgian Court was able to pull away extending the lead to 21-10 after a series of free throws made by Matt Ringel. The Lions were able to shoot 51.6% from the field and hold the Firebirds to 33.3% to keep the lead going into half time.
UDC was able to not only close the gap but take the lead after Quran Dublin sunk a jump shot at the three-point line. The Firebirds would go back and forth with the Lions, with neither team leading by more than three points. With less than 31 seconds to go the lions were up by one point. A foul called on Colon led Caleb Bowser to the free throw line where he went 1-1. With UDC down by two and less than eight seconds on the clock, Olukanni made a fast break to a lay-up where he pulled a foul on Bowser, to keep his team in contention. He went 2-2 at the at the free throw line to tie the Lions and send the game into overtime.
Overtime was just as intense as the second half, but the Firebirds were able to pull through going 50% from the field and out shooting the Lions 11-9 to win the game 85-83.
Next up the Firebirds will head to Nyack College to face off against the Warriors on. Saturday November 23rdat 3:00pm.
