Firebirds Battle Late but Fall to Virginia Union on the Road

Richmond, Va. — The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team put together a strong second-half push but ultimately came up short in a 73–64 road loss to Virginia Union on Wednesday night.

After trailing 36–24 at halftime, UDC surged back to score 40 points in the final 20 minutes, trimming the deficit to single digits behind efficient inside scoring and timely bench production.

David Pope led the Firebirds with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added six rebounds. Ty Williams provided a huge spark off the bench with 15 points of his own, while Michael Harrell chipped in 12 points and four rebounds. Rejuan Gray rounded out double-figure scoring with 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

UDC shot an efficient 48.1% from the field while converting 5 three-pointers, but Virginia Union capitalized at the free-throw line (18-of-28) and held a +6 edge on the glass.

UDC returns home on Saturday for a local rivalry against Bowie State at the EB Henderson Sports Complex — tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
