Gray erupts for a career-high 30, Firebirds battle late in setback at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.Rejuan Gray poured in a career-best 30 points while leading five Firebirds in the scoring column, but the University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team came up just short in a hard-fought road contest, falling 91–86 to Mercy College on Saturday afternoon.

Gray shot 9-of-14 from the field and a perfect 11-for-11 at the free-throw line, while also contributing three rebounds and two assists. The Firebirds (0-7, 0-2 ECC) put together a powerful second-half push, pouring in 54 points after the break to trim what had once been a double-digit deficit.

Ty Williams continued his impressive start off the bench with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Oliver Spence also finished in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds.

UDC outrebounded the Mavericks 49–39 on the day — including 12 offensive boards — generating second-chance scoring opportunities to fuel the rally. However, Mercy countered with timely perimeter shooting, knocking down 12 three-pointers and converting 21 free throws to keep the Firebirds at arm's length.

The Firebirds return home to the District where they will host the College of Staten Island next Saturday for another East Coast Conference matchup inside the EB Henderson Sports Complex. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
