Washington, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia men's lacrosse team put up a valiant fight but fell short in a 16-8 loss to Virginia State University at home on Saturday evening.
The Firebirds opened the scoring early with a goal from Dylan Donaldson at the 9:46 mark of the first quarter. Maxwell Hansberry followed up with another goal, assisted by Alan Fuentes, to give UDC a 2-0 lead. However, Virginia State responded with two quick goals to tie the game before the first quarter ended.
The second and third quarters saw the visitors take control, outscoring UDC 10-2 across both periods. Najuane Phillpotts scored UDC's lone goal in the second quarter, and Donaldson found the net again in the third, but Virginia State's relentless attack proved difficult to contain.
In the final quarter, the Firebirds showed some fight. Zakai Robinson, Hansberry, Jordan Schemm, and Fuentes all contributed goals, giving the home crowd a glimpse of their offensive potential. However, Virginia State maintained their lead, securing the win.
UDC (0-7, 0-1 ECC) will host Frostburg University on March 26th at 3:00pm.
