WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia Men's Soccer team picked up its second straight home victory, defeating Goldey-Beacom College 3–1 Saturday evening at the UDC Turf Field. The Firebirds open the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2022 season.
How It Happened
The Firebirds (2-0-0) jumped out to an early lead behind junior midfielder Ignacio Lopez, who opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a strike from a free kick. Sophomore forward Joao De Souza De Aquino took over from there, netting back-to-back goals in the 38th and 42nd minutes to give UDC a commanding 3–0 halftime advantage. Junior midfielder David Serra assisted on De Aquino's second tally.
Goldey-Beacom (0-2-0) pulled one back in the 53rd minute when Emanuel Bustos converted off assists from Matt Porto and Sean Dickie, but it was not enough as the Firebird defense held firm the rest of the way.
Goalkeeper Sergio Becerra anchored the defense with three saves in 90 minutes of action. DC outshot the Lightning 16–14 and dominated corner kicks by a 10–2 margin.
What's Next
The Firebirds (2-0-0) continue their September homestand on Saturday, Sept. 13, hosting Slippery Rock at 2:00 PM at the UDC Turf Field.
