UDC Women’s Home Game Win Streak Snapped by Lincoln
WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team saw their three home game win streak come to an end after a 76-56 loss to Lincoln University, Tuesday evening at the UDC Gymnasium. UDC fell to 5-4 on the season and LU improved to 5-3.
Three Firebirds scored in double figures, with freshman reserve Tori Williams leading the way with 11 points. Freshman starter Ronnasia Blatch-Huggins registered a double-double on 10 points and 11 rebounds and Latavia Jackson also contributed 10 points.
UDC struggled offensively shooting only 28.1% from the field and Lincoln shot at 44.3%.
Both teams struggled offensively for the first couple of minutes with UDC leading 1-0 after Aiyana Ellis knocked down one of two from the free-throw line. The visiting team would tie the game up at one with 6:44 left to go in the first quarter, which led to a scoring run that left the Firebirds in a 12-point deficit going into the second.
The Firebirds fought their way back, shaving the deficit down to just seven points, outscoring the Lions 21-16 before heading into the half. Destiny Ryles came out the quarter netting a three-point jumper and making it a two-possession game, but this was short-lived as LU responded immediately with a layup.
The visiting team would then go on to extend their lead 60-45 going into the last quarter. The Firebirds were unable to recover the deficit and struggled to net a basket resulting in a 20-point win for Lincoln.
Next up, UDC (5-4, 1-0) will host conference foe Queens College in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
