DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to Mercy college Saturday afternoon at the Mavericks Gymnasium. The Firebirds fell to 7-8, 3-3 in the ECC, and the Mavericks improved to 8-6, 6-0 in league play.
Destiny Ryles led the firebirds offensively with 21 points going 9-15 from the field while also grabbing five rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. Teammate Ke'Airah Massiah went 4-7 from the field and posted 12 points, two assists, and two steals. Kensley Benjamin came off the bench to round out the double-figure scoring with 10 points going 4-5 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc.
The Mavericks took control of the game in the first half outscoring the visiting Firebirds 41-29. UDC would have their best scoring quarter in the fourth shooting at 53.3% from the field while holding Mercy to just 23.5%. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to make up the deficit created in the first three quarters and the Firebirds fell 77-64.
UDC (7-8, 3-3 ECC) will travel back to N.Y. to face off against the College of Staten Island on Wednesday, January 19th at 5:00 pm. The game will be live-streamed on the ECC network.
