Fourth-Quarter Push Not Enough as UDC Drops Tight Contest to VSU

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team put together a tough defensive effort in front of a packed Homecoming crowd, but the Firebirds fell just short in a 55–52 decision to Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon at the EB Henderson Sports Complex.

The Firebirds (2–1) opened the game with energy, taking a 16–15 lead after the first quarter. However, scoring stalled in the second, where UDC tallied only four points and entered halftime trailing 29–20. UDC continued to battle in the fourth but was unable to complete the comeback.

UDC shot 71.4% from the free throw line and held a strong defensive presence with 9 steals and 6 blocks on the afternoon. Virginia State was led by Michaela Lane, who posted 17 points and 18 rebounds.

The Firebirds now turn their attention to a Monday road matchup as they travel to Frostburg State for a non-conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
