WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team opened East Coast Conference play in dramatic fashion, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas College, 72–62 in overtime Wednesday evening at the E.B. Henderson Sports Complex.

UDC jumped out to a strong start, holding STAC to just five first-quarter points while taking a 17–5 advantage through the opening 10 minutes. The Spartans battled back to narrow the gap by halftime, but the Firebirds maintained their poise and defensive intensity throughout a physical contest that featured several momentum swings.

Nhaikyia Smith delivered a standout offensive performance, scoring a game-high and career-high 25 points while shooting an efficient 8-for-12 from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 7-of-12 from the foul line. She also added four rebounds and two assists in a complete two-way effort.

Kristian Harris stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, a team-high seven assists, and six rebounds while playing all 45 minutes. Aiyana Ellis controlled the paint with 13 rebounds, five blocks, and four assists to go along with seven points. Dashani Coleman also chipped in 14 points.

The Firebirds dominated the boards 42–29 and found their success inside, converting 45.8% from the field while holding the Spartans to just 33.9% shooting overall. UDC sealed the win at the free-throw line in overtime, outscoring STAC 18–8 in the extra period.

With the win, UDC improves to 3–4 overall and 1–0 in ECC play.
