Second-Half Surge Lifts Molloy Past Firebirds

Rockville Centre, N.Y. — The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team dropped a 73–61 decision to Molloy on Wednesday evening at Bob Houlihan Gymnasium, as the Lions completed the season sweep in East Coast Conference play.

UDC (10-15, 6-9 ECC) controlled much of the first half and carried a 28–25 lead into the break after outscoring Molloy 16–12 in the second quarter. The Firebirds' defense held the Lions to 32.8 percent shooting from the field for the game, but Molloy's efficiency at the free throw line proved to be the difference, converting 29-of-29 attempts.

The Lions (12-15, 10-5 ECC) seized momentum in the second half, putting together a 23-point third quarter followed by 25 points in the fourth to pull away late.

Aliyah Eason led UDC with 20 points off the bench, knocking down four three-pointers and going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Dashani Coleman and Shaima James Lewis each added nine points, while Aiyana Ellis contributed eight rebounds, four steals, and six blocks in a strong all-around defensive effort. Nhaikyia Smith added six points and seven assists.

As a team, UDC forced 23 turnovers and recorded 17 steals and nine blocks, but Molloy held a 52–36 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards.

The Firebirds will close out the regular season this Saturday at home against Queens as they look to bounce back and strengthen their position in the East Coast Conference standings. With postseason implications on the line, UDC will be fighting to secure a spot in the ECC Tournament.
