UDC Women’s Lacrosse Held Scoreless in Loss at Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team was defeated by the University of Bridgeport, 17-0 in East Coast Conference action Friday night.

The Firebirds (0-10, 0-6 ECC) took eight shots, of which they put seven on goal, but never got on the scoreboard in just their 2nd shutout loss of the season. Bridgeport won its 2nd straight and 3rd of its last four games to improve to 11-3 overall (4-3 ECC).

The Purple Knights stormed out to a 10-0 lead within the first nine minutes of play, and then simply cruised to a 14-0 halftime lead. The Firebirds' defense did a solid job in the second half, holding Bridgeport to only three goals with 11 turnovers. Still, Bridgeport went on to win by a lopsided margin of 17 goals.

Dominique Dotson (Political Science – Coram, NY/Liberty) led the defensive effort with two caused turnovers while also putting two shots on goal for the Firebirds. Sophomore Jazmin Lopez (Graphic Design – Pembroke Pines, FL/Charles W. Flanagan HS) took a team-high three shots on goal.

Nine different Purple Knights scored at least one goal, including four apiece by Gabrielle Valela and Shealyn Scully. Bridgeport out-shot UDC 29-8, won 22-of-32 ground balls and 12-of-19 draw controls, and converted 10-of-12 clears compared to UDC's 7-of-15. The Purple Knights also had only 14 turnovers (11 in the second half) while forcing UDC into 22.

Next up, the Firebirds will visit the No. 18 ranked team in the IWLCA Division II poll, Dowling College on Sunday, April 19th.
