ETTRICK, Va. – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team fell to Virginia State University, 18–3, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
Virginia State came out strong, scoring five goals in the opening quarter and adding six more in the second to take an 11–0 lead into halftime.
The Firebirds broke through in the third quarter when Jada Williams scored to put UDC on the board. Williams led the Firebirds offensively with two goals on the afternoon.
UDC continued to battle in the fourth quarter as Najee Gunter added a goal before Williams struck again later in the period off an assist from Gunter.
Defensively, goalkeeper Natalia Perkins recorded 18 saves while facing a high volume of shots from the Virginia State attack.
The Firebirds return home this weekend to open conference play against D'Youville University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the E.B. Henderson Sports Complex.
