Firebirds Edge Close in Home Thriller, Fall 4–3 to D’Youville
Washington, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team fought hard in a home East Coast Conference showdown but came up just short, 4–3, against D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon.
The Firebirds (3–2, 1–1 ECC) came out strong by taking the doubles point behind a pair of nail-biting tiebreak victories. The Saints claimed a default at No.3 to open play, but Polina Zelentsova and Célia Bastin battled past Ashurbekova/Herbst, 7–6 (5) and Lina Benjelloun and Nadja Zmukic pulled through in another tiebreak, 7–6 (6).
In singles action, the Firebirds fought through a series of three-set thrillers. Zelentsova rallied from a one-set deficit to secure a comeback win at No. 1 singles, 0–6, 6–4, 7–6 (0). Célia Bastin delivered another gritty three-setter at the No. 2 spot, winning 6–2, 3–6, 6–4. Despite their efforts, D'Youville closed out the remaining courts to take the team victory.
The Firebirds will hit the road next Thursday for another ECC matchup as they face St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y.
