Zelentsova Earns Lone Point as Firebirds Fall to Wilmington
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team fell to Wilmington University, 6–1, in non-conference action.
The Wildcats took control early, securing the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The No. 1 doubles pairing of Célia Bastin and Polina Zelentsova battled in a tightly contested match but fell in a 7-6(3) decision.
In singles play, Polina Zelentsova delivered the lone point for the Firebirds with a strong performance at the No. 1 position, earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Elena Camacho.
Several other singles matches were closely contested, including a three-set battle at No. 2 singles where Célia Bastin pushed her opponent to a tiebreak in the second set before falling in a super tiebreak. Lina Benjelloun also forced a third set at the No. 3 position in another competitive effort.
The Firebirds return home on Friday for an East Coast Conference matchup against St. Thomas Aquinas.
