Firebirds Finish Runner-Up at ECC Indoor Championships with Five Event Titles
Staten Island, N.Y. — The University of the District of Columbia women's track & field team delivered a championship-caliber performance, placing second overall at the East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with 125 team points.
The Firebirds captured five individual event titles, recorded multiple personal bests, set an ECC Championship record, and secured numerous All-Conference honors in a historic showing for the program.
In the 60m hurdles, Hines clocked an electrifying 8.52, setting a new ECC Championship record and UDC school record. The time currently ranks her 15th in the nation, placing her firmly in national contention.
She followed with another dominant performance in the 60m dash, winning the title with a personal-best 7.65 seconds — the fastest time recorded in the East Region this season. Pulling off the sprint-hurdle double solidified Hines as one of the premier sprinters in the conference and region.
Kayla Cooper continued her legacy in the 200m, winning her fourth ECC Indoor 200m championship with a time of 25.68.
In the 800m, Samantha Morrison delivered one of the meet's most impressive performances, placing second overall with a massive personal record of 2:15.30. Her time not only shattered her previous best but also bested the previous ECC Championship record, highlighting the strength of her breakthrough performance.
Emmanuela Katou Kouami successfully defended her conference title in the weight throw, winning the event with a mark of 17.17 meters (56-4).
The quartet of Kayla Cooper, Samantha Morrison, Yalix Lina, and Tukey Francis closed out the championships in style, capturing the 4x400m relay title in 3:58.48. The victory marked the first time UDC has won the 4x400m relay since the 2019 championships.
