Hines and Katou Kouami Make History with USTFCCCA East Region Athlete of the Year Honors

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia track & field program earned historic recognition as Kyndra Hines was named the USTFCCCA East Region Track Athlete of the Year, while Emmanuela Katou Kouami was named the USTFCCCA East Region Field Athlete of the Year for the 2026 indoor season.

The duo becomes the first student-athletes in UDC program history to earn USTFCCCA East Region Athlete of the Year honors, marking a major milestone for Firebirds track & field.

Hines delivered a historic indoor campaign, establishing herself as one of the top sprinters and hurdlers in the nation. She broke the UDC school record in the 60-meter hurdles (8.52) and went on to qualify for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, where she competed against the nation's top athletes. Hines also captured East Coast Conference titles in both the 60m hurdles and 60m dash, while earning East Region titles in both events, solidifying her position as the top track athlete in the region.

Katou Kouami dominated in the field events, earning East Region Field Athlete of the Year honors following a record-breaking season in the weight throw. She set a new UDC program record with a mark of 18.43 meters, ranking among the top performers in NCAA Division II. Katou Kouami consistently led the region throughout the season and capped her campaign with a regional title in the weight throw.

The dual honors highlight a remarkable indoor season for the Firebirds, marking a major milestone for the program as it continues to rise on the regional and national stage.

UDC now turns its focus to the outdoor track & field season, where the Firebirds will look to build on their momentum and continue their championship-level performances.
