District of Columbia Women's Outdoor Track & Field Ranked No. 7 in East Region After Week 1

NEW ORLEANS - The University of the District of Columbia women's outdoor track & field squad has been ranked No. 7 in the USTFCCCA East Region poll after a stellar performance in the first week of the season. The Firebirds also have several individual athletes ranked among the top-8 in the region in their respective events.

After coming off a historic inaugural East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field championship win in March, District of Columbia started the outdoor season with an impressive performance at the Terrapin Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland on March 30th.

Several Firebirds earned regional rankings with their performances at the Terrapin Invitational, including: Rochelle Nelson (3rd - 400M), Jerily Benjamin (4th - 400M), Kaydian Jones (5th - 400M; 2nd Long Jump), Kimoy Mais (4th - 800M), Callister Jones (5th - 800M), Shauna-Kay Creary (7th - Long Jump), Simone Grant (5th - Triple Jump).

District of Columbia also features the No. 1 4x100M and 4x400M relay teams in the East Region, according to this latest poll. The 4x100M team of Kaydian Jones, Shauna-Kay Creary, Atiya Amis and Simone Grant finished in 47.81 at the Terrapin Invitational last Saturday. Meanwhile the 4x400M team of Marlena Wright, Jerily Benjamin, Rochelle Nelson and Simone Grant raced to a very impressive time of 3:54.15.

The Firebirds have this weekend off before they travel down the road to Fairfax, VA to compete in the George Mason Invitational on Saturday, April 13th.
