Lady Firebirds Defeat Bowie State Lady Bulldogs for 2nd Straight Win

Washington, DC—The UDC Lady Firebirds won their second consecutive volleyball match of the young 2007 season this afternoon at home, by defeating the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs 3-1. Junior transfer Anne Sanchez (Orlando, FL) paced the Lady Firebirds with twelve kills, twenty-six attacks and four service aces.

Junior transfer Janea Burt (Lexington Park, MD) added ten kills, and twenty-two attacks, with freshman Karen Trevino (Anthony, MN) and sophomore Laila Benjamin Houston, TX) each contributing eight kills to the winning effort.

UDC appeared to have the match under control after winning the first two sets (30-20 and 30-14), but had some difficulty at the start of the 3rd set and could not recover, as Bowie State won it 30-28. UDC came back to win the 4th set, 30-22, and take the match.

Setter Carmen Smith (Houston, TX) gave thirty-five assists to enable her teammates to tally forty-eight kills during the match. The Lady Firebirds will see their next action September 6, when they host the Virginia Union University Lady Panthers at 6 p.m.
