UDC Slips in NOVA Southeastern Tournament

 

Ft. Lauderdale, Fl: September  11, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team lost two matches today at the NOVA Southeastern University Shark's Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  The University of Minnesota- Duluth defeated the Firebirds, 3-0, with scores of 25-13, 25-15, and 25-14, in their first match of the day.

Junior outside hitter Mirella Nunes (Business major-Sao' Paulo, Brazil) led the Firebird scoring with 7 kills in the Minnesota-Duluth match, followed by senior middle hitter Karen Trevino (Political Science major- Anthony, MN) with 6 kills and  junior outside hitter Grace Perilli (Economics major- Nashville, TN) with 5 kills. Alyssa Nelson  paced Minnesota-Duluth players with 11 kills.

In the second match of the day, the University of Minnesota-Mankato also defeated the Firebirds,3-0. Match scores were25-20, 25-8, and 25-22. In this match Perilli was the leading Firebirds scorer with  8 kills, while Nunes tallied 5, and  Garley and Trevino each had 4. Minnesota -Mankato player Amanda Beekman led all scorers with 18 kills, followed by Kimber  Kuhl with 9.

"Our goal was to expose our players to the top echelon of Division II volleyball and challenge our players to compete on that level.  Although not victorious, The Firebirds played hard and received many compliments for their defense and competitiveness on the court losing several games by less than five points to nationally ranked teams Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota-Mankato.

This tournament was an important step for enhancing our image among Division II college coaches and will help upgrade our recruiting efforts to attract strong student-athletes," stated UDC Head Coach Sheila Weaver.

With these losses UDC fell to 5-4 for the season. Their next match will be at home against Washington Adventist University  on Tuesday, September 14, at 7 p.m.
