Firebirds Clinch Postseason Berth with Senior Day Victory Over Daemen

Washington, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team secured its place in the postseason with a 1–0 Senior Day victory over Daemen University on Saturday afternoon at the UDC Turf Field.

The Firebirds extended their unbeaten streak to six matches, improving to 7–3–3 overall and 3–2–2 in East Coast Conference play, while celebrating a senior class that has helped shape one of the program's most successful eras.

UDC's breakthrough came in the 15th minute, when Ignacio Lopez produced a moment of brilliance off a free kick. The junior midfielder struck a looping volley over a line of defenders — the ball bouncing past the Daemen goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the match's only goal.  The highlight-reel strike marked Lopez's fourth goal of the season and first game-winner.

Defensively, the Firebirds remained composed and organized throughout, holding Daemen to just six total shots and two on goal. Goalkeeper Sergio Becerra made two saves to earn his second consecutive shutout, anchoring another disciplined effort from the UDC back line. The Firebirds finished with an 18–6 advantage in shots and 5–3 edge in corners, controlling play for most of the match.

Before kickoff, UDC honored its six seniors — Axel Gamez, Vasco Irazola, Sergio Becerra, George Shaw, David Akinsanya, and Brandon Johnson — each recognized for their leadership, commitment, and lasting impact on the program.

With today's win, the Firebirds locked in their place in the 2025 ECC Championship Tournament. Next up, the Firebirds travel to Jefferson University on Wednesday for their final non-conference matchup of the regular season before returning home for their ECC regular season finale against Molloy on Saturday.
