Firebirds Open 2025 Season with 2–1 Victory over Shepherd

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia Men's Soccer team opened its 2025 campaign in dramatic fashion Thursday evening, defeating Shepherd University 2–1 at the UDC Turf Field. The home opener was highlighted by a special ring ceremony honoring the 2024 East Coast Conference Champions, the program's first ever title.

How It Happened

The Firebirds struck first in the 15th minute when Ignacio Lopez buried a penalty kick to give UDC the early 1–0 advantage. Just 90 seconds later, Shepherd equalized with a goal from Justin Langon, leveling the score at 1–1.

UDC regained control after halftime. In the 55th minute, Alexander Moody-Stuart netted the eventual game-winner, finishing off a well-executed play assisted by Lopez and Zachary Parker.

Shepherd pressed late but was denied by strong defensive work and an excellent performance in goal from Sergio Becerra, who tallied six saves to secure the win.
