Firebird Spotlight - Liam Haycock, Men's Soccer

About Liam

Liam Haycock is a junior majoring in English.  He is from Stafford England, a small village located in the central part of the country.  Liam would like to remain in the United States following graduation and is interested in being a sports reporter for a newspaper although he eventually sees himself as an intercollegiate coach.

Why UDC?

Head Coach Matt Thompson and Assistant Coach Danny Wadeson were big influences in Liam’s decision to attend the University of the District of Columbia.  He was welcomed with open arms saying: “The decision was worth it; I am grateful I was chosen by the coaches.”   Liam has taken full advantage of being in Washington, D.C.  “Washington is great.  UDC is in the center of it all, museums and restaurants.  It is a unique city,” Liam said.

Academics

Liam has enjoyed his academic experiences.  Two favorite professors include Dr. Mohamed Elkhawas who taught U.S. History.  “I had Dr. Bullock my first semester.  He played a big part in helping me get through,” Liam insisted.

Favorites

Liam enjoys living with some members of the men’s tennis team who are engaged in FIFA soccer video game competition. (Liam claims to be winning the competition as he does not take kindly to losing) He enjoys walking to clear his mind.  In addition to fish and chips, Liam loves Sunday Roast – one of the reasons he is going home for Christmas this year!

On the Pitch

Liam does not have pre-competition rituals.  His preparation begins the day before the contest as he thinks about what needs to be done on the field.  He ensures he eats at the correct time and stays hydrated.  During games, Liam tries to stay calm, concentrate and focus on the play.  Due to an injury he is experiencing this season, while giving 110% Liam says he still needs to be sensible while on the field.  “Playing for the University is an honor.  To wear the jersey is an honor and I respect that,” Liam stated.  “Coming to the U.S. for academics and playing has been the best experience,” he added.

Liam’s Advice

“Work hard, nothing is given easily.  Earn respect and know your place,” Liam advises.  He said that he came here with a broad mind and learned from others.  “I was shy when I first came here.   My coaches and the Athletic Department staff impacted me in a way that has helped me.  My parents are proud - they tell me that I’ve become the man they expected to see.”  Liam further advises students to embrace what D.C. has to offer.  “Make yourself known to get further in life.  Give 110% in everything, stay humble, keep expectations and stay on track.  Amaze yourself.”

Coach Matt Thompson on Liam:

Liam is a tremendous person and he leads by example. He has so many obstacles in his way when it comes to being able to play physically, but he shows up on time and willing to do whatever he can to benefit the team. He has a strong character and is mentally strong. He is highly respected by his peers and coaching staff alike and is very supportive of everyone around him. I have only heard him be extremely positive and the glass is always half full with Liam! He sets a great example both on and off the field – with his academics being just as strong as his athletic abilities. Liam is a very well rounded person and I have no doubt that he will be a success with his future endeavors.
