Two Firebirds Earn Weekly ECC Basketball Honors. Brandon Herbert Tabbed ECC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Tournament MVP, Stacy Griffith Named to the ECC Women’s Weekly Honor Roll
Washington, DC – The University of the District of Columbia Men's and Women's Basketball Teams continued their impressive 2011-2012 campaigns. The Men's Team currently sits at 5-1 and the Women's Team remains undefeated at 4-0. In addition to both teams' successful starts to the season, both programs continue to garner individual East Coast Conference (ECC) awards on a weekly basis. On the men's side, senior guard Brandon Herbert (Baltimore, MD – McDonogh School) was named ECC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. On the women's side, senior forward Stacy Griffith (Fredericksburg, VA – Riverbend HS) was selected to the ECC Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.
Herbert led the Firebirds this past weekend as they won the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament in Melbourne, FL. Herbert was named tournament MVP after scoring 48 points and gathering 17 rebounds on the weekend. On Saturday, in the championship game against Florida Tech, Herbert led all scorers with 28 points on 8-15 shooting. He was 8-8 from the free throw line and corralled 12 rebounds. On Friday against Flagler, Herbert scored 20 points and had 5 rebounds.
The UDC Men's Basketball Team has opened up the season 5-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of Division I opponent Duquesne. This past weekend UDC capped off an impressive road trip winning the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament by defeating Florida Tech 82-75 on Saturday and Flager 83-70 on Friday. In addition to Herbert, senior guard Nigel Munson (Washington, DC – Dematha HS) was also named to the Florida Tech All-Tournament Team tallying 34 points and 15 assists over two games. The UDC Men return to action on Wednesday, November 30th at home at 7:00 pm against Queens.
For the UDC Women, Griffith had a big time effort for the Firebirds as they defeated no. 18 ranked Holy Family 72-56 on Tuesday, November 22nd in Philadelphia, PA. Griffith posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Firebirds have opened the season with a 4-0 record. The UDC Women returns to action on Saturday, December 3rd at home against Virginia Union at 2:00 PM.
