Firebirds’ Strong Season Ends in ECC Semifinal

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team closed out a remarkable 2025 campaign on Saturday night, falling 4–1 to top-seeded Queens College in the East Coast Conference Semifinal at Knights Field.

The Firebirds (9-4-4, 3-2-3 ECC) showed fight until the final whistle, cutting into Queens' early lead when junior Isaiah Daniel headed in his first goal of the season off a long throw-in from Zachary Parker just two minutes into the second half. The strike brought UDC within two, but the Knights added a late insurance goal in the 84th minute to advance to the ECC Final.

Despite the result, the 2025 season was one of the most successful in program history. The Firebirds recorded **nine victories—their most since 2017—**and pieced together a nine-game unbeaten streak during the regular season. Defensively, UDC was dominant, posting seven shutouts, the program's highest total since 2021, behind the leadership of senior goalkeeper Sergio Becerra and a composed back line anchored by David Akinsanya, Niaza Tamini, and Quinton Ejechi.

Becerra closed his Firebird career as one of the top goalkeepers in program history, finishing with 192 career saves and a program-record-tying seven shutouts this season—matching the mark set by Javier Abadia in 2021. Over his three-year career, he totaled 10 shutouts, cementing his legacy as a cornerstone of UDC's defensive success. He also led the ECC in shutouts this season.

The Firebirds' balanced attack was equally impressive, as 11 different players scored a goal this season, while 13 Firebirds recorded at least one point, showcasing the team's depth and versatility across all positions.

UDC also earned seven All-Conference selections (Ignacio Lopez, David Akinsanya, Alexander Stevens-Lee, Axel Gamez, Isaiah Daniel, Zachary Parker and Alexander Moody-Stuart), the second-most among all ECC schools, trailing only Queens. The honors underscore the Firebirds' growth and depth under head coach Matthew Thompson, who has guided the program to three consecutive ECC Semifinal appearances and five overall in program history.

UDC registered seven shots (four on target) and held a 9–8 edge in corner kicks. Becerra made eight saves in goal.

UDC's 2025 season showcased the program's continued growth and stability under Head Coach Matthew Thompson. With multiple program records, conference honors, and postseason success, the Firebirds reaffirmed their place among the ECC's most competitive teams.
